GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 1 amateur golfer in the world, Jackson Koivun, and five other top young golfers, Luke Clanton, Gordon Sargent, Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard and David Ford, will play the Wyndham Championship next week, and three of them earned PGA TOUR membership through PGA TOUR University, the tournament announced today. The 86th annual Wyndham Championship is set for July 30-Aug. 3, 2025 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
These players join Rickie Fowler, FedExCup No. 7 Ben Griffin, former world No. 1 Adam Scott, Max Homa, 2022 U.S. Open Champion Matt Fitzpatrick, Scottish Open Champion and FedExCup No. 23 Chris Gotterup, FedExCup No. 15 Robert MacIntyre, FedExCup No. 26 and past champion Lucas Glover, FedExCup No. 29 Sungjae Im, FedExCup No. 30 Ryan Fox, FedExCup No. 33 Thomas Detry, defending champion Aaron Rai, past champions Kevin Kisner, Si Woo Kim, J.T. Poston, Tom Kim, two-time champion Brandt Snedeker, Webb Simpson and Camilo Villegas in the field.
Koivun holds the top spot in both the U.S. Amateur Rankings and the Golfweek/Amateurgolf.com rankings. He finished tied for sixth at the ISCO Championship earlier this month after finishing tied for 11th at the John Deere Classic the previous week. The 20-year-old Auburn University student earned his PGA TOUR card through PGA TOUR University but will return to Auburn this fall and accept PGA TOUR membership next year.
The Wyndham Championship will be Koivun’s sixth PGA TOUR start of the season, and he’ll play on a sponsor’s exemption. A native of San Jose, Calif., who grew up in Chapel Hill, N.C., Koivun finished fourth in the 2022 AJGA Wyndham Invitational at Sedgefield. He is the first player to win all four major collegiate awards. He won the Jack Nicklaus, Fred Haskins, Ben Hogan and Phil Mickelson awards in addition to the 2024 SEC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards.
Clanton finished fifth in last year’s Wyndham Championship when playing on a sponsor’s exemption; he holds the tournament record for best finish by an amateur. The Florida State University alumnus turned professional this year and has played 10 events. His best finishes are tied for 15th at the Farmers Insurance Open and tied for 18th at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. He won the 2025 Ben Hogan Award given annually to the best college golfer in the country. He finished tied for 19th and tied for 21st in his two AJGA Wyndham Invitational starts at Sedgefield.
Sargent is a Vanderbilt University alumnus who turned professional this year. He has three made cuts in four starts this season. He finished tied for 24th at the ICSO Challenge for his best finish of the season. He won the Mark H. McCormack Medal as the world’s top male amateur, and during his freshman season at Vanderbilt, he won the 2022 NCAA Division I Individual Championship – the first for Vanderbilt. Then the No. 1 amateur in the world, he played in the 2024 U.S. Open and Open Championship. He was the 2023 Golfweek National Player of the Year and the SEC Golfer of the Year. He finished tied for third and tied for seventh in his two AJGA Wyndham Invitational starts.
Nicolai Hojgaard will make his third-consecutive Wyndham Championship start next week. He finished tied for 14th in 2023 but missed the cut last year. At the end of a busy 2025 season, the Denmark native and resident is 69th in FedExCup points and 81st in the Official World Golf Rankings. He still seeks his first PGA TOUR win but has some excellent finishes this season including second at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, eighth at the Mexico Open at VidantaWorld, tied for fourth at the Scottish Open two weeks ago and tied for 14th at the Open Championship last weekend.
His identical twin brother, Rasmus, is 80th in FedExCup points and 76th in the Official World Golf Rankings; he’ll make his first Wyndham Championship start. Like Nicolai, he finished second at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, tied for 12th at the WM Phoenix Open and tied for 16th at the Open Championship last week for his best finishes of the season. Rasmus and Nicolai led Demark to the 2018 World Amateur Team Championship where they claimed the Eisenhower Trophy.
Ford won the Wyndham Invitational in 2020 and turned professional this spring after his career at the University of North Carolina. He is exempt on the PGA TOUR through next season after finishing first in the 2025 PGA TOUR University standings. The Peachtree Corners, Ga., native won the 2025 Fred Haskins and Jack Nicklaus Awards as the National Player of the year, and he was named the 2025 Golfweek National Player of the Year. He won seven tournaments in his college career tying the University of North Carolina record and was named All American following all four of his collegiate seasons including first team in 2023 and ’25. He has five PGA TOUR starts and is still looking for his first made cut.
