Wyndham Championship Earns Two “Best Of” Awards During PGA TOUR Tournament Meetings

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — The Wyndham Championship (Greensboro, N.C.) was honored by the PGA TOUR at the TOUR’s Tournament Meetings on Thursday, November 20 in La Quinta, Calif.

The Wyndham Championship earned two awards for “Best Title Sponsor Integration” and “Best Social Media Activation” during the 2014 tournament at Sedgefield Country Club.

“On behalf of the PGA TOUR, I am delighted to congratulate the Wyndham Championship for the special recognition it has received with these two awards,” PGA TOUR executive vice-president and chief of operations Andy Pazder said. “The tournament staff should be extremely proud of its hard work and for being recognized as the best among its peers on the TOUR.”

For “Best Title Sponsor Integration”, Wyndham created a campaign that created a “last summer vacation” feel, which included a beach, a replica ski lodge equipped with a fire place, skiing simulators and the opportunity for fans to unlock prizes with room keys handed to them at the entrance. Wyndham’s charitable foundation also supported the tournament’s first foray into a Junior Golf Summit, a Birdies for Backpacks program as well as giving support to the local First Tee Chapter.

In the category of “Best Social Media Activation”, the Wyndham Championship created a social media plan that engaged and educated fans about the tournament’s 75th anniversary while creating an overarching connection with Wyndham and its family of brands to increase the visibility of the title in the social media community. The plan included an Instagram contest which began seven months in advance to generate buzz and reward one fan per week with a prize from Wyndham.

Continuing with the anniversary celebration, the Wyndham Championship released a top tournament moment in history on a daily basis for the corresponding anniversary number which concluded the day prior to play across the tournament’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

The Wyndham Championship also promoted its social media efforts with signage throughout the course, a tweet patrol and the first twitter vending machines.

“What a great honor for both Wyndham Worldwide and our local team to be recognized by the PGA TOUR and the tournaments with these two awards,” Wyndham Championship Tournament Director Mark Brazil said. “We are very fortunate to have Wyndham as our title sponsor and our partner, and the awards are evidence that Wyndham Worldwide is fully committed to making the Wyndham Championship one of the best events on the PGA TOUR.”

The 2015 Wyndham Championship, won this year by Camilo Villegas, will be held August 17-23 at Sedgefield Country Club.

Contested annually on the Donald Ross-designed course at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., the Wyndham Championship was founded in 1938 and is the sixth-oldest event on the PGA TOUR excluding the Majors. The tournament thanks title sponsor Wyndham Worldwide, presenting sponsor BB&T and Premier Partners, Cadillac, Harris Teeter, Lincoln Financial, McConnell Golf, New Breed Logistics, Sunbrella®, Technology Concepts & Design, Inc. and VF Corporation for their continued support.
