National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Susan Fullam

For Susan Fullam, golf is a rather fun sport, both to play and watch. That’s what got her out to the Wyndham Championship to begin with. Now, eight years later, she’s still at it. Even though a lot of that has to do with enjoying a weekend of golf, there’s much more to it for her.

“There’s such camaraderie with the other volunteers,” Fullam said. “You see the same people every year. It’s the only time I see most of them. So it’s something that I look forward to.”

As a volunteer with the clothing committee, Fullam packages and distributes the shirts and other various pieces of clothing for volunteers. In the afternoon, though, you can find her perched over the tee box at hole No. 1, where she, as an ambassador, controls noise during a player’s shot.

Fullam believes the people at the Wyndham Championship, from the top all the way down, are one big community, all working together towards a common goal. To her, that’s special.

“It’s the people,” Fullam said about what makes the tournament so great. “From the chairperson and the fact that they come around and make sure everything’s okay. The coordinator role volunteers, volunteer chairperson and the ambassador chairperson, they want to make sure that their volunteers are being taken care of and are safe.”

Fullam was also very complimentary of the Wyndham Championship, the TOUR and the players’ contributions to the Piedmont Triad community.

“What I admire about the PGA TOUR is they always give a lot to charity,” Fullam said. “That speaks volumes about the association and the players.”

Over her eight years, Fullam has had some great memories as a volunteer, but one sticks out. Near the end of a tournament her first year, three-time Wyndham champion Davis Love III came into the volunteer tent to thank them for all their hard work.

Fullam has an appreciation for golfers like Love, and many others, who throughout their career, “show up week after week after week and really play the game.”

Susan, thank YOU for showing up day after day and bringing your best to the Wyndham Championship!
