JACKSON KOIVUN LEADS STELLAR GROUP OF “YOUNG GUNS” INTO WYNDHAM FIELD

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jackson Koivun, who won his first PGA TOUR event in just his third start last weekend, leads a powerful group of “young guns” into next week’s Wyndham Championship field, the tournament announced today. The 87th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 5-9, 2026, at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.

Koivun leads Luke Clanton, Ben James, Aldrich Potgieter, Gordon Sargent and Michael Thorbjornsen in what is arguably the strongest class of “young guns” ever to compete in the Wyndham Championship.

These players join two-time Major winner Justin Thomas, World No. 3 and defending champion Cam Young, three-time Major winner Jordan Spieth, five-time Major winner Brooks Koepka, 2025 Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley, reigning PGA Championship winner and 2024 Wyndham winner Aaron Rai, FedExCup No. 7 Si Woo Kim, FedExCup No. 18 Ryan Gerard, FedExCup No. 19 Alex Fitzpatrick, FedExCup No. 24 Alex Smalley, 2023 Open Championship winner Brian Harman,  as well as past champions FedExCup No. 28 J.T. Poston, Brandt Snedeker, Lucas Glover and Webb Simpson, three-time Ryder Cupper Patrick Cantlay FedExCup No. 34 Harris English, FedExCup No. 37 Sepp Straka.

Koivun, 21, won the 3M Open on Sunday capturing his inaugural PGA TOUR victory in just his third start as a professional. He finished fifth in last year’s Wyndham Championship as an amateur – one of three top-six finishes he recorded last year. He earned PGA TOUR membership through PGA TOUR University Accelerated last year, but the No. 1 amateur in the world at that time chose to return to Auburn University and accept TOUR membership after this year’s U.S. Open. A native of San Jose, Calif., now playing from Chapel Hill, N.C., he is 70th in FedExCup points and 73rd in the Official World Golf Rankings. After playing this week’s Rocket Classic, he will make his fifth-career professional start at the Wyndham Championship next week.

Clanton, 22, set the mark for low Wyndham Championship finish by an amateur when he finished tied for fifth in 2024. Last year, Koivun tied that mark. He forewent his senior season at Florida State University and officially accepted PGA TOUR membership via PGA TOUR University Accelerated after the 2025 NCAA Championship. After a solo-fifth finish at the 2024 Wyndham Championship, Clanton followed Jack Nicklaus as the second amateur with three top-10s in a PGA TOUR season since 1961. He hasn’t won yet but finished tied for fifth at the Puerto Rico Open earlier this season.

James, 23, earned PGA TOUR membership as the No. 1 player from the 2026 PGA TOUR University rankings after four seasons at the University of Virginia. While at UVA, he earned seven individual victories, tying Ben Kohles’ school record for career wins. He is playing this week’s Rocket Classic making the Wyndham Championship his eighth start of the season; his best finish was tied for fourth at the Corales Puntacana Championship earlier this month. He is 142nd in FedExCup points.

Potgieter, 21, is 64th in FedExCup points and 88th in the Official World Golf Rankings. A native and resident of South Africa, he captured his first PGA TOUR win at last year’s Rocket Classic but has not won this season. His best 2026 finishes are fifth at the Genesis Invitational and tied for eighth at the RBC Canadian Open. He will make his first Wyndham Championship start next week.

Sargent, 23, earned his 20th point at the 2023 World Amateur Team Championships to become the first player to earn PGA TOUR membership through PGA TOUR University Accelerated. Though he was eligible to accept membership as soon as June 2024, he returned to Vanderbilt University for his senior season and later accepted PGA TOUR membership after the 2025 NCAA Championship and made 11 starts last year. This season, his best finishes were tied for second at the Corales Puntacana Championship and tied for eight at the Puerto Rico Open. He will make his second Wyndham Championship start next week. He is 132nd in FedExCup points.

Thorbjornsen, 24, is 69th in FedExCup points and 68th in the Official World Golf Rankings. He finished No. 1 in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking after four seasons at Stanford University, following Texas Tech University’s Ludvig Åberg (2023) as the second player in history to earn PGA TOUR membership via a No. 1 finish in their respective PGA TOUR University classes. He remains in search of his first victory but has had some strong finishes this year including tied for third at the WM Phoenix Open and tied for seventh at the Scottish Open earlier this month.
