GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sam Burns, No. 19 in FedExCup points and No. 20 in the Official World Golf Rankings, is a late addition to the Wyndham Championship field highlighted by Justin Thomas, Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, the tournament announced today. The 84th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 2-6, 2023 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.

Burns joins two-time Major winner and 2017 FedExCup champion Justin Thomas, former World No. 1 and past Masters champion Adam Scott, 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, 2019 Open Championship winner Shane Lowry, 2019 U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland, Ryder Cup captains Zach Johnson and Luke Donald, 2014 FedExCup champion Billy Horschel, FedExCup No. 18 and 2016 champion Si Woo Kim, FedExCup No. 22 Adam Schenk, FedExCup No. 25 Denny McCarthy, FedExCup No. 26 Chris Kirk, FedExCup No. 27 Taylor Moore, FedExCup No. 33 Russell Henley, FedExCup No. 35 Sungjae Im, FedExCup No. 36 Adam Svenson, FedExCup No. 37 Adam Hadwin, FedExCup No. 39 Brendon Todd, FedExCup No. 40 Harris English, past champions J.T. Poston, three-time champion Love III, Webb Simpson, Ryan Moore and two-time champion and 2012 FedExCup champion Brandt Snedeker.

The field includes:

  • 13 of the top 40 in FedExCup points
  • 21 of the top 50 in FedExCup points
  • 30 of the top 60 in FedExCup points
  • 40 of the top 70 in FedExCup points
  • 50 of the top 80 in FedExCup points
  • 59 of the top 90 in FedExCup points
  • 68 of the top 100 in FedExCup points

“This field illustrates the new points priorities very clearly, “executive director Mark Brazil said. A lot of guys are working to get into the top 70 and make the playoffs, and a lot are working to stay in the top 50 or make it into the top 50 after the first playoff event to be eligible for the designated events next season. And several are looking to make into the top Comcast Business TOUR Top 10 and a shot at that bonus money. The bottom line is the Wyndham Championship field is very strong, and we should have an incredible tournament next week.”

Burns won the World Golf Championships – Dell Technologies Match Play earlier this season; it was his fifth-career win. His other top finishes include sixth at the Valspar Championship, tied for sixth at the Charles Schwab Challenge and tied for 11th at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The Louisiana State University alumnus finished tied for 13th at the 2020 Wyndham Championship in his only previous appearance here. He represented the United States in the Presidents Cup last fall and the Arnold Palmer Cup in 2017

Players have until 30 minutes after the final putt drops at today’s second round of the 3M Championship in Minneapolis to join the field. The field as of 5 p.m. today is below; the top-four finishers from Monday’s qualifying tournament at Bermuda Run Country Club will also join the field.
