Volunteers Eligible for Free Vacation from Wyndham; Registration Still Open

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – Two very lucky Wyndham Championship volunteers will receive a free vacation courtesy of tournament title sponsor, Wyndham Worldwide, it was announced today.  In addition, Cone Health returns to the Wyndham this year as the tournament’s official volunteer sponsor.  The 74th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 12-18, 2013.

As a token of their appreciation for the hard work and dedication Wyndham Championship volunteers contribute to the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event, Wyndham Worldwide will provide free lodging for a vacation at a location to be determined for two very lucky Wyndham Championship volunteers following this year’s tournament.

While this year’s volunteer team is still coming together, hundreds of dedicated volunteers work the Wyndham each year.   Following the tournament, the names of all volunteers who worked a minimum of three days will be placed in a random drawing for one of the Wyndham vacations. Some of the volunteers are called “chairmen,” and each chairman oversees a specific part of the Wyndham and the volunteers within it.  Chairmen will be entered into a second drawing for a Wyndham vacation. In addition, following the tournament, all volunteers will be entered into a drawing for several tournament gifts as an additional “thank you” for their efforts.

Piedmont Triad residents can still get in on the chance to win a Wyndham vacation by joining the volunteer corps.  Volunteer registration remains open on the Wyndham Championship website.  Please visit http://wyndhamchampionship.com/volunteers/registration/ and follow the simple instructions in the registration process.  Volunteers will be asked to purchase a volunteer package for $50.  The package includes a Wyndham Championship Polo golf shirt, a tournament hat, a poncho for inclement weather, a weekly credential and a weekly ticket book for a friend.  If purchased separately, this package represents a $365 value.

Each year, Wyndham Championship staff and volunteers cast their ballots to select a volunteer of the year.  The 2012 volunteer of the year is Phil Cathcart, the man responsible for providing golf carts for hundreds of people whose tournament jobs require them to travel around the Donald Ross-designed golf course at Sedgefield Country Club quickly. Tournament officials, volunteers and sponsors all count on Cathcart to provide fully-charged golf carts every morning of tournament week.  It is a job that requires Cathcart to be at the course well before dawn until well after dark for seven straight days.

“It means a lot,” Cathcart said.  “It is very nice to be recognized for your hard work and commitment.  People often ask why I take so much time off from work and away from my family for the golf tournament.  My answer is quite simple: my wife and I do our best to volunteer and give money to charity, but we would always like to give more.  I donate my time and energy so that I can do my part to help the Wyndham Championship make a significant charitable impact for deserving charities that Lee Anne and I are happy to help.”

Contested annually on the Donald Ross-designed course at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., the Wyndham Championship was founded in 1938 and is the seventh-oldest event on the PGA TOUR.  Tickets are available at wyndhamchampionship.com or through the tournament office.  The tournament thanks title sponsor Wyndham Worldwide, presenting sponsor BB&T and Premier Partners, Cadillac, Harris Teeter, McConnell Golf, Sunbrella®, Technology Concepts & Design, Inc. and VF Corporation for their continued support.  Additional tournament information, including ticket packages and sponsorship information, is available at wyndhamchampionship.com or through the tournament office at (336) 379-1570.  For more information about Wyndham Worldwide, please visit www.wyndhamworldwide.com.  Stay connected with the Wyndham Championship through its social media channels, including the Wyndham Championship Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram, Foursquare, Flickr and YouTube.
